Essential oils

Essential oils

Essential oils, are complex mixtures consisting of numerous organic compounds. Essential oils can be obtained by steam distillation or by pressing plant material, of which they retain characteristics such as taste and odor. They are in the form of volatile liquids, oily consistency, aromatic odor, generally colorless with little color. They are poorly soluble in water and soluble in alcohol.

The essential oils we process

We can supply vegetable oils obtained from various parts (flowers, leaves, flowering aerial parts, fruits and peels, roots, etc.) of numerous plants from various geographical areas of the world.

We can also offer terpene-free or rectified essential oils. Deterpenation is an operation to remove volatile monoterpenes, which can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. These also have double bonds that tend to oxidize, resulting in substances that can alter the odor of the essential oil over time. In addition, some essential oils may contain undesirable components (e.g., irritants, or having an unpleasant odor) and are conveniently used after rectification by fractional distillation.

Some examples of essential oils that we can supply are:
  • Rhododendron essential oil
  • Mugwort essential oil
  • Chamomile essential oil
  • Basil essential oil
  • Citronella essential oil
  • Palmarosa essential oil
  • Turmeric leaf essential oil

Essential oils by hydrodistillation or steam current

Steam distillation enables the extraction of essential oils from a plant matrix by taking advantage of their transport by water vapor. This extraction technique, in fact, relies on the volatility of essential oils, which are easily vaporized and can be carried by the water vapor current. Inside the distiller, boiling water generates steam, which passes through the plant material, making the cell walls more permeable, until they break down. This facilitates the escape of the essential oil, which, entrained by the vapor itself, is conveyed to a cooling coil where it condenses and returns to a liquid state. At this point, the essential oil separates from the water because of its lower density.

Both fresh plants, possibly harvested during their balsamic period, and dried plants can be distilled.

Some examples of essential oils typically obtained by steam distillation or hydrodistillation that we can provide are:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Thyme essential oil
  • Essential oil of peppermint
  • Essential oil of rosemary
  • Verbena essential oil
  • Essential oil of eucalyptus
  • Essential oil of hemp
  • Essential oil of cinnamon

Essential oils by juicing

Squeezing lends itself well to obtaining essential oils from heat-sensitive plant matrices. A typical example of this is citrus peels, which are subjected to juicing to obtain essences.

Some examples of essential oils typically obtained by squeezing that we can provide are:

  • Orange essential oil
  • Lemon essential oil
  • Bergamot essential oil
  • Tangerine essential oil
  • Essential oil of lime
  • ...

Essential oils by supercritical extraction

Supercritical extraction uses CO2, pure or mixed with other inert gases, at such a high pressure that it becomes liquid and extracts the essential oils from the plant matrix. The resulting liquid extract is depressurized, and the CO2, returning to a gaseous state, moves away from the extract, which thus results in pure essential oil. This extraction method is mainly applied to plants or flowers that have highly volatile odor components, e.g., jasmine, which would be in danger of being lost during steam distillation.

Some examples of essential oils typically obtained by supercritical extraction that we can provide are:

  • Arnica essential oil
  • Cardamom essential oil
  • Pepper essential oil
  • Essential oil of cocoa
  • Essential oil of myrrh
  • Essential oil of coriander
  • Essential oil of echinacea
  • Essential oil of ginger
  • Essential oil of licorice
  • Essential oil of calendula
  • Essential oil of oregano
  • ...
