Fluid extracts
Fluid extracts are prepared using techniques such as maceration and percolation, using hydroalcoholic solutions as an extraction vehicle, with an alcohol content that can vary depending on the vegetable matrix that is extracted.
Following extraction, the liquid is concentrated until it reaches a final Drug/Extract (D/E) ratio of 1:1, i.e. one kilogram of plant matrix yields one kilogram of fluid extract. In this way, the resulting solution contains almost the same amount of active ingredients present in the plant of origin.
Given the presence of alcohol, which itself has antimicrobial properties, these extracts usually do not require additional preservatives.
Fluid extracts lend themselves to being used in drops, diluted in a little water, but more often they are used for the preparation of remedies such as syrups.
