The lichens
Lichens are a perfect example of symbiosis between two organisms: an autotroph, usually an algae (and more rarely a cyanobacterium), and a heterotroph, i.e. a fungus. The entity that emerges from this association has completely different morphological and functional characteristics compared to the individual original components. In the context of this symbiosis, the fungus draws nourishment from the substances produced by the algae, while the latter, thanks to the protection offered by the fungus, can thrive even in otherwise inhospitable environments, in particular those characterized by water scarcity.
