The roots
In addition to anchoring the plant to the soil and absorbing water and minerals, roots are often a reservoir of vitamins and nutrients, such as starches and sugars. In addition, they are often the site where the biosynthesis of phytohormones, e.g. cytokinins, and other natural substances, such as alkaloids or other compounds that have the function of defending the plant against pathogens, takes place.
